PE Days:
Wednesday PM (indoor) and Thursday PM (outdoor) – Children should come to school in PE kit on those days.
Please ensure that your child is wearing a full PE kit (plain white or house coloured t-shirt, black leggings/skirt/shorts/jogging bottoms, white socks and plimsolls or trainers) in school each PE day. Long hair should be tied back and earrings must be removed or covered with tape for PE.
Library Day: Monday
The children will be given an opportunity to visit the library once a week during which they will be able to select a reading book for pleasure. We will read daily in class and there will be opportunities for independent and paired reading throughout the day. If your child would like to take their library book home, please make sure it is brought back into school every day.
School Reading Book (Bug Club): Friday
The children will be able to change their school reading book once a week. We recommend re-reading books if they are finished before this time.
Longer texts, that require more than a week, can be kept until they need to be exchanged.
Celebration Assembly: Friday
As a school, we host our celebration assemblies on a Friday afternoon. Our ‘star of the week’ will receive a certificate in this assembly and their parents/adults are invited to join us. We also award two children with a ‘great job’ certification every day – these certificates are to recognise and celebrate those children who have shown great enjoyment, perseverance and success – in line with our school values.

This half term we will be focusing on place value for the first three weeks. This will involve reading and writing numbers to 1,000,000, comparing and ordering numbers to 100,000, partitioning numbers, rounding, powers of 10 and roman numerals. We will then move on to learning about the addition, subtraction and aspects of multiplication including multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers.
The children worked incredibly hard in the lead up to the Multiplication Check in Year 4 and made great progress however, it is important that they continue to practise their tables as these skills can become less secure without regular practice. Speed, fluency and accuracy are vital when applying times tables knowledge to other areas of the math curriculum. Please continue to support your child to become a ‘Times Table Master’ by encouraging them to use TTRockstars regularly.
This half term we will be using the text Wild Boy by Rob Lloyd to inspire our writing. We will focus on character and setting descriptions before the children have the opportunity to write their own narratives based on the events in the text. Later in the term we will be reading The Girl Who Walked on Air and will then write persuasive letters.
Reading
This half term we will be reading a range of short texts and picture books. Our aim is to build the children’s fluency and expose them to a range of different authors and genres. We will also be ensuring that there is free-reading time and encouraging the children to read widely and often both in and outside of school.
Once the children have settled into the new routines in Year 5, we will be sending home a pack of home learning activities. These activities are optional, but completing them will earn your child house points or dojos. The tasks are designed to reinforce what we are learning in class and help build confidence and retention.
Our main focus for home learning will be daily reading. Just 15 minutes each day can make a big difference to your child’s vocabulary, comprehension and confidence. Your child will also be given their log in for Bug Club to practise the spelling games we use in class. We also encourage regular use of TTRS to ensure quick and accurate recall of multiplication facts.
