At Emsworth Primary School, it is our intent to deliver a science curriculum that nurtures and encourages children’s natural curiosity of the world around them. We aim for our children to work and think like scientists to enable them to understand, at their own level, the impact science has on the world around them.
The implementation of science at Emsworth Primary School is through a combination of substantive and disciplinary knowledge. Children are provided with scientific fact and are given the opportunity to understand how those facts have been established, giving them a holistic understanding.
We are fortunate that our extensive school grounds and surrounding locality provide us with opportunities to enhance certain aspects of the science curriculum. This allows our children to draw on aspects of their scientific learning in a meaningful, real-life context and apply their disciplinary skills.
The impact of our science curriculum will provide children with powerful knowledge of scientific concepts to be confident and inquisitive scientists. Encouraging a natural curiosity will allow our children to ask complex questions beyond what they know.
At Emsworth Primary, we follow the science National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2. Pupils begin their science learning journey in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Child initiated topics within ‘Understanding Our World’ are explored and specific themes are led by the interests of the cohort. Specific statements from ‘Development Matters’ are taught through high quality practical and exploratory experiences to ensure a purposeful transition from EYFS to KS1.
